Fig. 02 — La Mata, Torrevieja.

The Vega Baja is the farming region around Torrevieja. Its produce goes straight to La Mata’s market stalls every Wednesday.

Torrevieja salt is the local product with the longest reach: 600,000 to 800,000 tonnes a year, with flor de sal hand-harvested in the hottest months.

Products from outside the region found here too

Not everything sold and eaten in local markets is strictly from the Vega Baja — some products come from the neighbouring Region of Murcia.

Cieza peach — Cieza belongs to the Region of Murcia, but its peach (with a Protected Geographical Indication) is a seasonal staple in the region’s markets.

Murcian fried almonds — Like the peach, this is a neighbouring-region product that’s a regular part of the local pantry due to proximity.

[TO VERIFY and expand: Vega Baja artichoke, ñoras peppers, citrus, Elche pomegranate, figs.]

Apartment close to La Mata’s weekly market.
