Where the name comes from

It's not just a figure of speech: an old psychiatric residence once stood near this beach, and its patients used to bathe there on medical prescription. Locals gradually started calling it "Playa de los Locos" ("Beach of the Madmen") — and the nickname eventually became the official name. It is also formally known as Playa El Salaret.

The beach

[TO VERIFY: sources disagree on the exact measurements — 700 m, 760 m and 892 m in length depending on the source, and between 27 and 30 m wide]

Fine golden sand, a bay sheltered by Punta del Saladar and a breakwater that divides it into two zones. Blue Flag since 2015, with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 certification and the Qualitur distinction.

The waves are more active than on the city's sheltered beaches — a popular spot for light water sports such as snorkelling and paddleboarding.

Atmosphere

Lined with an avenue of restaurants, ice-cream parlours and beach bars — it's the usual meeting point after sunset in Torrevieja. It contrasts with the quieter, more family-friendly character of Playa de La Mata. → Playa de La Mata

Services and parking

Lifeguard service in high season, daily cleaning, access ramps and boardwalks. Blue-zone parking next to Paseo Juan Aparicio, at around €1/hour (2-hour maximum in high season) — it fills up before 10:00 on August weekends.

How to get there from La Mata

4 km, about 8 minutes by car. By bus, urban line A goes right to the beach (stop "Domti – Playa de Los Locos").
