La Mata beach is the longest in Torrevieja. It averages ~47 metres wide, with golden, fine sand and a few rocky patches at the shoreline. The swell is moderate, stronger than on beaches sheltered by the Torrevieja harbour breakwater.
History and name
The real origin: "La Mata" comes from the low Mediterranean scrubland (mata) that grew wild along this stretch of coast before any settlement existed.
The nickname that almost replaced it: in the 1960s, after a nearby development built by northern European residents, locals started calling the area "Swedes’ Beach". The nickname circulated for a while before the traditional name returned. The same crowd that today is the target audience for winter long stays was already leaving its mark on the place name back in the 1960s.
