The Nature Reserve of the La Mata and Torrevieja Lagoons has been a Special Protection Area for Birds (SPA) since 1989.
Flamingos, black-necked grebes (up to 3,000), little grebes, avocets, pale harriers, red-crested pochards, and several tern species.
Artemia salina, the brine shrimp living in the hypersaline lagoon, is the flamingos’ main food source and the reason for their pink colour.
The La Cigüeñuela, Zampullín, El Altillo and l’Illa lookouts. Best time: early morning and late afternoon.
Apartment 1.5 km from the nature reserve. Bring binoculars.
