International Habanera and Polyphony Contest of Torrevieja

Since 1955, in late July, at Torrevieja's Teatro Municipal, with a giant screen and extra seating at Paseo Vista Alegre, next to the Monument to the Coralist. A new venue for the contest is under construction at Eras de la Sal, part of a €29.2M project that will also include a new Museum of the Sea and Salt — a separate project from the existing Torrevieja International Auditorium.

An international choral music contest specialising in habaneras and polyphony. Listed as a Festival of International Tourist Interest since 1994. Held every year without interruption since 1955; the first edition took place on 7 August 1955.

Why habaneras in Torrevieja

Because of salt. Torrevieja sailors travelled to Cuba to trade salt during the 19th and 20th centuries. Those voyages brought back a musical repertoire that became a defining feature of the city.

By the numbers

Over a thousand choir singers of any nationality, with choirs from five continents. Performances are outdoors, just metres from the sea. There’s also a Youth Contest held in April.
